In 2014, our founder pitched and won the 48 Hour Film Festival in Memphis, Tennessee. The prize? A team to plan, shoot and premier a mini film in two days. As writers, we could fill this page ALL THE WAY UP with words. Or, you could check out this minute feature to get an idea of the transforming work done, which we hope to continue doing for generations to come. Presenting: Art Therapy.
We are so grateful to the entire community that pulled together to make this happen so that we could have a strong way to show you who we are and what we do. Thank you Memphis!
How Did This Work Begin?
In 2012, our director was partaking in an international program for women being suited for self-sufficiency. Dress For Success chose her to be their representative for the 2012 Community Action Project, which is a world wide competition where members go into their communities doing social good for one year with a small seed grant. The project went on to win 4th place nationwide, but when the competition was over, the work did not stop. It was found to be a need for youth. Take a read below to understand the depth of the program, and the results a year of community good can do for young people.
Documenting Progress
We've come a long way from where we started. Below is the documentary that was shot throughout 2012 as we traveled to find out how poetry could be used a tool for growth.
You Can Help
We serve at risk, urban youth, typically from poor neighborhoods. We do not wish to charge students to experience this program. With your help, we can make art therapy accessible to troubled youth, give them a voice, purpose, and make our world a more loving, accepting place.
